Overview

History & significance

Peveril Castle is a Norman castle situated on a hilltop overlooking Castleton in Derbyshire, founded in the eleventh century following the Norman Conquest. The castle is dominated by its substantial stone keep, built in the early Norman period, which remains one of the most impressive survivals of its kind in the English Midlands. The site also preserves fragmentary remains of bailey defences and curtain walls dating from the eleventh to fourteenth centuries, reflecting successive phases of medieval occupation and modification. By the late medieval period the castle had declined in importance, and it was eventually abandoned, leaving the stone keep as the most substantial architectural survivor of the site's long medieval history.
