Overview

History & significance

Preceptory at Dukes Place is a former medieval commandery of the Knights Templar located in Kent. The site dates from the twelfth or thirteenth century, when it functioned as a property holding and administrative centre for the military religious order. Little survives of the original structures above ground, though archaeological investigation and historical records indicate its significance as one of the Knights Templar's English estates. Following the suppression of the Order in the early fourteenth century, the preceptory passed into secular hands and its buildings were gradually lost to time and development.
