History & significance

The prehistoric settlements, fields and enclosures within the Shapley Common coaxial field system, located 770 metres south of Challacombe Cross in Devon, comprise part of a broad landscape of Bronze Age and Iron Age land organisation. The monument includes the remains of settlement structures and associated field boundaries that form part of a larger coaxial field system, characterised by a regular geometric arrangement of parallel field divisions typical of later prehistoric agriculture.
