Rath & souterrain is a early Christian ringfort and underground passage situated near Coleraine in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The monument stands on bedrock of Palaeogene extrusive rocks, a foundation of ancient mafic lava and tuff laid down during the Paleogene period some 66 to 23 million years ago. This volcanic geology is characteristic of the north-eastern landscape shaped by the great Tertiary volcanism that produced the basalt plateau of the Antrim plateau and the underlying igneous rocks of the region.
The rath consists of an earthen ringfort, a residential enclosure typical of early medieval Irish settlement, accompanied by a souterrain—an underground stone-built passage excavated into the bedrock. Such dual monuments served elite families from around the 5th to 12th centuries, with the ringfort providing a defended domestic space whilst the souterrain offered secure storage or refuge. The combination reflects the prosperity and status of the settlement's inhabitants during the early Christian period in Ulster.
The site is now protected by the Historic Environment Division under reference 11546, ensuring its preservation as an important record of early medieval settlement patterns and construction techniques in the region. The monument survives as an upstanding earthwork and represents a significant class of archaeological evidence for understanding the social organisation and material culture of early Christian Ireland.
