Overview

History & significance

Rehiran Farm House cairn is a Bronze Age burial monument located in Nairnshire in the Scottish Highlands. The cairn sits on bedrock formed from the Moine Supergroup, ancient metamorphic rocks of gneissose psammite and gneissose semipelite that were transformed during the Neoproterozoic era. This underlying geology of hard, crystalline stone would have presented considerable challenges to the monument's builders, who constructed the cairn some 1,530 metres to the east-south-east of Rehiran Farm.

The monument belongs to a widespread tradition of cairn building across northern Scotland during the Bronze Age, when communities marked significant burial sites with stone heaps. The Highland landscape around Nairnshire, with its thin soils over bedrock, contains numerous examples of such monuments, testifying to the enduring importance of these burial places across generations.

The site is protected by Historic Environment Scotland as a scheduled monument under reference SM11797, ensuring its preservation for future study and understanding of Bronze Age funerary practice in the region.
