Riddell Motte and Bailey is a medieval fortification situated approximately 600 metres north-east of Riddell in Roxburghshire, Scotland. The site consists of an earthen motte, a raised mound, with an associated bailey or defended enclosure, typical of Norman and post-Norman military architecture in the Scottish Borders. Such motte-and-bailey fortifications were commonly constructed from the late eleventh century onwards and served as administrative and defensive centres during the medieval period. The earthwork remains represent an important example of early medieval settlement hierarchy in the region, reflecting patterns of feudal control and territorial organisation characteristic of the Anglo-Norman expansion into southern Scotland.
