Rink Hill is an Iron Age fort situated 700 metres north-east of Selkirkshire in the Scottish Borders. The monument occupies high ground underlain by Hawick Group wacke, a hard sedimentary rock formed in the Wenlock period of the Silurian era. This durable bedrock would have provided a stable foundation for the fort's defences and internal structures, whilst the elevated position afforded strategic views across the surrounding landscape.
The fort represents a significant settlement from the later prehistoric period, when hillfortified settlements served as centres of authority, storage and refuge across southern Scotland. The wacke bedrock, though challenging to excavate and construct upon, would have yielded stone suitable for building the defensive works and domestic structures that typically characterised such sites.
