Roche Abbey is a Cistercian monastery founded in the mid-twelfth century in South Yorkshire, situated in a remote valley location typical of Cistercian settlement patterns. The abbey was dissolved during the reign of Henry VIII, after which its substantial stone structures, including parts of the church and claustral ranges, fell into ruin. The monastic precinct remains archaeologically significant, retaining evidence of the gatehouse and other domestic buildings within its planned layout. In the eighteenth century the ruins were incorporated into a designed landscape garden, when the site's romantic character was appreciated and the fragmentary stone architecture became valued as picturesque ornament.
