Roche Abbey is a Cistercian monastery founded in the twelfth century in the parish of Roche, South Yorkshire. The abbey occupied a substantial monastic precinct containing the conventional buildings typical of Cistercian communities, with surviving architectural remains including parts of the church and claustral ranges. A gatehouse served as the principal entrance to the monastic enclosure, controlling access to the abbey's lands and facilities. In the eighteenth century, following the abbey's dissolution, the site was incorporated into a designed landscape garden, which shaped the aesthetic presentation of the ruins in accordance with contemporary picturesque taste.
