The Roman field system and trackway with later field ditches and drove on Whittlesey Washes is a palimpsest monument preserving evidence of agricultural organisation across multiple periods in the Cambridgeshire fenlands. The site comprises Roman field boundaries and an associated trackway, subsequently overlain and modified by later medieval or post-medieval field ditches and a drove way, demonstrating the continuity and evolution of land use in this marginal wetland environment. Located sixty metres south of Bedford House on Whittlesey Washes, the monument reflects the systematic exploitation of fenland resources during the Roman period and the subsequent reorganisation of drainage and stock routes in later centuries. The surviving earthworks and their archaeological record provide evidence for the adaptation of agricultural practices to the challenging topography and hydrology of the fen landscape.
