Overview

History & significance

Norham Castle is a medieval fortification situated on a promontory above the River Tweed in Northumberland, commanding the border between England and Scotland. The castle was founded in the late eleventh century by the Bishop of Durham and comprises a substantial stone keep of Norman date together with extensive curtain walls and defensive outworks developed over several centuries. The keep, constructed in the twelfth century, exemplifies the martial architecture of the Anglo-Norman period and has been modified and refortified repeatedly to reflect its strategic importance during the prolonged Anglo-Scottish conflicts of the medieval era. The site occupies a naturally defensible position of considerable strength, and its ruins remain among the most imposing castle remains in northern England.
