The site consists of an earthwork defensive enclosure characteristic of early Christian period settlement in Ulster, featuring a distinctive counterscarp bank which formed part of its fortification system. The monument dates to the early Christian period, a time when such raths served as the defended homesteads of the Hiberno-Celtic aristocracy and farming communities. The presence of recorded tree ring evidence from the site provides potential dating material for understanding the chronology of early medieval settlement in this region of north-east Ulster.
