Salachill is an abandoned township situated 250 metres south-southeast of Perthshire in the Scottish Highlands. The settlement lies upon bedrock of the Southern Highland Group, a geological formation of psammite and pelite deposits laid down during the Middle Cambrian period. This ancient metamorphic foundation provided the stone used for local building and reflects the challenging landscape inhabited by the community.
The township represents a type of rural settlement typical of upland Perthshire, where scattered hamlets and small farming communities formed the basis of Highland life. The site's abandonment reflects the broader processes of depopulation and reorganisation that affected many such settlements from the eighteenth century onwards, as agricultural practices changed and economic pressures reshaped the region's population patterns.
