Burnt mounds of this period, typically dating from around 1500 to 500 BC, represent evidence of thermal stone technology, wherein heated stones were used in cooking, water heating, or industrial processes such as tanning or brewing. The monument consists of a mound of fire-cracked stones and charcoal, the characteristic debris of repeated heating and cooling cycles. Such sites are widespread across northern Britain and Ireland, and their presence in Orkney indicates the exploitation of thermal resources by prehistoric island communities during the Bronze Age.
