Overview

History & significance

Sandown Castle is a Tudor coastal artillery fort constructed under the direction of Henry VIII between 1539 and 1540 as part of a series of defensive works built along the Kent coast to counter the threat of invasion from France and Spain. The castle is situated at Sandown on the Isle of Sheppey and exemplifies the distinctive design of mid-sixteenth-century English coastal fortifications, with low, heavily bastioned walls built to accommodate cannon and withstand artillery bombardment. The fort originally comprised a central circular keep surrounded by an outer fortification, though much of the structure has been lost to coastal erosion and marine action over the subsequent centuries. Despite significant damage, Sandown Castle remains an important surviving example of early Tudor military engineering and reflects the strategic concerns of Henry VIII's reign.
