History & significance

Sections of single and multiple linear boundary dykes on Huggate Pasture and Frendal Dale is a complex of prehistoric earthwork boundaries located in the Yorkshire Wolds. The monument comprises multiple linear dykes, some occurring singly whilst others run in parallel formations, characteristic of territorial divisions established during the Bronze Age or Iron Age. These substantial linear earthworks served principally as land boundaries, livestock management features, or territorial markers across the chalk downland landscape. The dykes remain visible as pronounced linear banks and ditches that define the archaeological character of this section of the Wolds and contribute significantly to understanding prehistoric land use and social organisation in northern England.
