Segontium Roman Fort is a Roman auxiliary fort located near Caernarfon in Gwynedd, Wales, which served as a key military installation during the Roman occupation of Britain. Built around AD 77–78 during the governorship of Agricola, the fort was established to control the Menai Strait and facilitate Roman expansion into north Wales, remaining occupied for approximately three centuries. The fort occupied an area of roughly two hectares and followed the characteristic playing-card layout of Roman forts, with stone fortifications constructed in its later phases. Extensive archaeological excavation and surviving earthworks, including ditches and ramparts, have revealed considerable material culture including pottery, coins, and inscriptions, making Segontium one of the most important Romano-British sites in Wales and a significant testament to Roman military organisation in the province.
