Overview

History & significance

The site of the Roman town of Wroxeter, known as Viroconium Cornoviorum, is a scheduled ancient monument in Shropshire containing the remains of a substantial Romano-British settlement established in the first century AD. The town served as a significant administrative and military centre for the Cornovii tribe and later as a civilian urban settlement, with occupation extending through the Roman period until the early fifth century. The visible archaeological remains include substantial masonry foundations, notably parts of the public baths complex and the forum, which represent some of the most impressive Roman structural archaeology in Britain. Excavations have revealed that Viroconium was eventually abandoned as Roman authority withdrew from Britain, with later Saxon settlement occurring on adjacent land but not upon the Roman town itself.
