Overview

History & significance

The site of the Roman town of Wroxeter, ancient Viroconium, is a scheduled ancient monument occupying approximately fifty acres near the village of Wroxeter in Shropshire. The town was established as a military fortress around AD 58 during the Roman conquest of Britain and subsequently developed into a prosperous civilian settlement, becoming one of the fourth-largest cities in Roman Britain. Extensive archaeological excavation has revealed the remains of substantial stone buildings, including a basilica and forum complex, bath house, and residential structures, with visible earthworks and foundations surviving above ground across the site. The settlement was largely abandoned by the early fifth century as Roman military authority withdrew from Britain, and the ruins were subsequently quarried for stone, though significant structural remains including the hypocaust system of the bathhouse continue to be visible to the modern visitor.
