History & significance

Site revealed by aerial photography N of Easton Lodge is a complex of medieval and later agricultural features recorded through systematic aerial survey in Northamptonshire. The site comprises ridge and furrow cultivation patterns and associated field systems characteristic of medieval open field agriculture, visible as soil and crop marks from the air rather than as upstanding earthworks. The archaeological evidence indicates intensive agricultural use of the landscape during the medieval period, typical of the English Midlands' farming practices. The discovery and recording of the site through aerial photography demonstrates the value of this methodology in identifying and mapping archaeological features that remain largely invisible at ground level.
