Overview

History & significance

Slight univallate hillfort is an ancient monument located on the summit of Haughmond Hill in Shropshire, England. During the eighteenth century, the hilltop was adapted for pleasure grounds when a folly was constructed, reflecting contemporary fashions for romanticising ancient remains. The summit was further modified during the Second World War when a spigot mortar emplacement was installed as part of Britain's anti-invasion defences, creating a palimpsest of military occupation spanning two millennia.
