Stockton & Darlington Railway: Brusselton Inclines is a set of inclined planes constructed as part of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, which opened in 1825. Located in Durham, the inclines represent an early engineering solution to the challenge of conveying loaded waggons up steep gradients, a critical technical feature of this pioneering public railway. The site demonstrates the innovative approach taken by George Stephenson and his engineers to overcome topographical obstacles whilst utilising stationary steam engines and rope haulage systems. As one of the surviving infrastructure elements of Britain's first public steam railway, the Brusselton Inclines retain significant archaeological and historical importance as evidence of early nineteenth-century railway engineering practice.
