Stratford Langthorne Abbey is a Cistercian foundation established in Essex in the mid-twelfth century, originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The abbey, situated in what is now West Ham, became one of the wealthier religious houses in Essex before its dissolution in 1538 during the Reformation. Fragmentary remains of the abbey precinct survive within the scheduled monument area, with Baker's Row occupying land within the former monastic boundaries. The site represents an important example of Cistercian settlement in the Thames valley and retains archaeological significance despite post-medieval development and loss of substantial structural remains.
