The Surrey Iron Railway embankment is a surviving section of the first public railway to operate in Britain, constructed between 1801 and 1803. This earthwork, located southwest of Lion Green Road in Coulsdon, represents part of the horse-drawn tramway that connected Wandsworth to Croydon, serving the transport of goods including stone and coal across Surrey. The embankment demonstrates the early engineering practices employed in railway construction during the early Industrial period, with the raised trackway built to facilitate the movement of wagons along a fixed route. The site retains archaeological and historical significance as a physical remnant of this pioneering transportation infrastructure that preceded the development of steam-powered railways.
