The Toot is a motte and bailey castle situated approximately 450 metres south-west of St Mary's Church in Buckinghamshire. The monument comprises a substantial earthwork mound typical of Norman fortifications, likely constructed in the eleventh or twelfth century as part of the network of defensive structures established following the Norman Conquest. The site later underwent transformation into a manorial complex, reflecting the transition from military stronghold to administrative and residential centre during the medieval period. The earthworks remain substantially preserved, providing archaeological evidence of both the castle's original fortification phase and its subsequent development as a manorial seat.
