The vallum between Cockmount Hill and Walltown Quarry West is a Roman defensive earthwork forming part of Hadrian's Wall, running through wall miles 43, 44 and 45 in Northumberland. Constructed in the second century AD, the vallum comprises a substantial ditch with accompanying mounds, positioned to the south of the wall's main line and serving as a boundary marker and defensive feature of the frontier complex. The section surveyed here demonstrates the characteristic V-shaped profile of the ditch, with the earthwork's preservation varying across the three-mile stretch due to subsequent agricultural and quarrying activities. This portion of the vallum remains significant as evidence of Roman military engineering and the integrated defensive system that characterised Hadrian's Wall during the imperial period.
