Thornton Abbey is a substantial Augustinian monastery founded in the twelfth century in Lincolnshire, England, which developed into one of the region's most important religious houses. The site retains considerable physical remains including a monumental red-brick gatehouse dating from the late fifteenth century, defensive precinct walls, a deep moat, fishponds, and traces of a medieval road and bridge that provided access across the abbey's precinct. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the sixteenth century, the site was adapted for secular use, with a college and school subsequently established there, and residential buildings constructed on the former monastic grounds. The survival of these structural elements, from both the medieval religious period and the post-Dissolution transformations, makes Thornton Abbey a significant archaeological complex documenting continuity and change in land use across several centuries of English history.
