History & significance

Three agglomerated enclosures containing stone hut circles, a cairn cemetery, post-medieval fields and tinworks on Chagford Common is a multi-period archaeological complex on Chagford Common in Devon. The site comprises Bronze Age settlement evidence in the form of stone-built hut circles grouped within three adjoining enclosures, together with a cairn cemetery indicative of funerary practices during the same period. Later activity on the site is represented by post-medieval field systems and tinworks, reflecting the exploitation of mineral resources in this moorland landscape during the early modern period. The juxtaposition of prehistoric domestic and funerary remains with later industrial use demonstrates the long history of human occupation and economic activity on Chagford Common.
