Three Palmerstonian Gun Batteries, Flat Holm is a post-medieval defensive installation built on this small island in the Bristol Channel. The batteries were constructed during the mid-nineteenth century as part of Britain's extensive coastal defence programme under the direction of Lord Palmerston, the Prime Minister and military strategist. This fortification programme responded to perceived threats from foreign powers and sought to protect British shipping and naval interests in home waters.
The batteries occupy a challenging site on Flat Holm's exposed landscape, where the underlying Early Jurassic claystone bedrock has weathered to create steep cliffs and uneven terrain.
