Torvean is a medieval motte situated approximately 270 metres north of Torvean Croft in Inverness-shire, Scotland. The monument represents a form of early medieval fortification characteristic of the Norman period and its Scottish adoption, consisting of an artificial or modified earthen mound designed to support a timber or stone structure and palisade. Such mottes were typically constructed from the eleventh century onwards and served as the focal points of feudal territories, combining defensive and administrative functions. The site's survival as an earthwork in the Scottish Highlands demonstrates the geographical spread of Norman-influenced fortification practices beyond southern Britain and into the Scottish lowlands and glens during the medieval period.
