Townhead lime kilns is a scheduled ancient monument comprising limestone processing installations and associated railway infrastructure located in Cumberland. The site includes substantial stone-built lime kilns of probable nineteenth-century date, together with remains of a tramway that served the kilns across Rusby Hill and Ladslack Hill, reflecting the industrial extraction and processing of limestone in the region during the post-medieval period. The tramway represents a significant example of industrial transport infrastructure developed to facilitate the movement of limestone and lime products from the quarrying and processing operations. The site demonstrates the character of small-scale industrial enterprise in upland Cumberland during the nineteenth century.
