Prehistoric hut circle settlement associated field system and medieval shieling 2.35km south west of Great Dun Fell radio transmitting station is a multi-period upland archaeological site in Westmorland comprising remains from both prehistoric and medieval periods. The prehistoric element consists of hut circles and associated field systems that attest to Bronze Age or Iron Age settlement and agricultural activity on the high moorland, whilst the medieval component comprises a shieling, a temporary or seasonally occupied pastoral shelter typical of upland grazing exploitation in the medieval period. The site reflects long-term human use of the high Pennine landscape for both permanent and transhumant settlement, demonstrating the sustained economic significance of these marginal upland environments across millennia. The remains are scheduled as an ancient monument in recognition of their archaeological importance in understanding prehistoric and medieval upland land use in northern England.
