Overview

History & significance

Redoubt No1, Redoubt No2 and Redoubt No3 at Maker Heights is a scheduled ancient monument comprising three artillery fortifications constructed during the Napoleonic Wars in the early nineteenth century. The site consists of two complete batteries and the partial remains of a third, positioned strategically on elevated ground near the Tamar estuary in Cornwall to defend against potential French invasion. These open-backed earthwork redoubts feature characteristic gun emplacements designed to mount coastal artillery and command views across the water approaches. The fortifications represent part of the extensive system of Napoleonic-period defences constructed along the Cornish and Devon coasts during the prolonged threat of French invasion between 1803 and 1815.
