History & significance

Unenclosed hut circle settlement, associated field system and cairnfield on Standrop Rigg is a Bronze Age and Iron Age upland settlement complex located on moorland in Northumberland. The site comprises scattered hut circles, remains of field divisions, and a cairnfield indicative of sustained pastoral and agricultural use during the prehistoric period. The hut circles represent domestic occupation structures, whilst the cairnfield and field boundaries demonstrate the intensive management and exploitation of this elevated landscape for stock-raising and cultivation. The monument's dispersed character and moorland setting are typical of later prehistoric settlement patterns in northern Britain, reflecting adaptation to the upland environment.
