History & significance

Ritto Hill is a complex of later prehistoric settlement remains located in the open moorland west and north west of Linhope in Northumberland. The site comprises four unenclosed settlements alongside an associated enclosure, field system, and cairnfield, demonstrating sustained settlement and land use across the later prehistoric period. The unenclosed settlements consist of house platforms and associated structures typical of later Iron Age and Bronze Age occupation, whilst the field systems represent contemporary agricultural practice and pastoral management. The cairnfield indicates ritual or funerary practices integrated within the settlement landscape, collectively illustrating the hierarchical organisation and productive capacity of prehistoric communities in this upland region of northern England.
