Upton medieval village and seventeenth-century garden earthworks is an ancient monument in Northamptonshire comprising the deserted remains of a medieval settlement together with later ornamental garden features. The site preserves earthwork evidence of the medieval village layout, including ridge-and-furrow cultivation patterns and structural foundations, whilst the seventeenth-century elements reflect the landscape modifications undertaken during the post-medieval period. The juxtaposition of these two phases of occupation and land use provides archaeological evidence for the transition from medieval agricultural settlement to early modern estate management. The earthworks survive as a palimpsest of landscape history spanning several centuries of human activity and social change.
