Wemyss Caves is a series of natural sandstone caves situated on the Fife coastline at East Wemyss, several of which contain Pictish carved symbols dating to the Early Medieval period. The caves were utilised over an extended period, with evidence of occupation and use spanning from prehistoric times through the Medieval era, though the most significant archaeological interest centres on the Pictish carvings. The rock art includes symbols such as the Pictish beast, serpents, and other incised motifs characteristic of Pictish artistic tradition, likely dating to the sixth to eighth centuries. The caves themselves are cut into the soft sandstone cliffs and remain important as testimony to early Scottish settlement patterns and symbolic practices.
