Willoughby is a deserted medieval village in Nottinghamshire containing the remains of domestic settlement, agricultural infrastructure, and religious provision spanning the medieval and post-medieval periods. The site comprises a moated manor house of post-medieval date, the parish church, six fishponds, extensive ridge and furrow field systems, and a hollow way, together forming a comprehensive picture of medieval settlement organization and land use. The village abandonment reflects the common pattern of settlement desertion and agricultural consolidation that affected many English villages during the late medieval and early modern periods. The survival of these archaeological features, including the church and moated enclosure alongside field systems and communication routes, provides significant evidence for understanding medieval rural economy, settlement morphology, and landscape change in the East Midlands.
