About this dataset

What is a scheduled monument?

A scheduled monument is an ancient or historic site formally recognised by law as being of national importance. Scheduling is the primary means by which England, Scotland and Wales protect their archaeological heritage: it restricts development, metal detecting and unauthorised disturbance on or near designated sites.

The 32,000+ monuments in this index are drawn from three national registers: the National Heritage List for England (Historic England), the HES INSPIRE dataset (Historic Environment Scotland), and the Cadw Scheduled Ancient Monuments register (Welsh Government). Each record carries the official designation number used by the relevant authority.

Aubrey integrates this full dataset into every location report, identifying scheduled monuments within range of your chosen location and placing them in the broader story of the surrounding landscape.
