Overview

History & context

Duroliponte was a small Roman town situated on the River Cam at the site of modern Cambridge, occupying the gravel terrace around Castle Hill on the river's north bank. It developed from a mid-1st century AD military post into a civilian settlement that persisted through the 4th century, eventually being enclosed by defensive walls in the late Roman period, making it a roughly 10-hectare walled town.

Significance

Historical significance

The settlement was a road junction of regional importance, lying on the Via Devana between Colchester (Camulodunum) and the legionary fortress at Leicester (Ratae), and connecting to the Akeman Street fen-edge route. It served as a local market and administrative node for the surrounding fen-edge agricultural landscape, which was intensively exploited under imperial estate management.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Excavations on Castle Hill and around the modern Shire Hall have revealed timber buildings, streets, ovens, wells, and burials, with evidence of late Roman stone defences comprising a wall, rampart, and ditches enclosing the town. Finds include coins, pottery (including Nene Valley wares), and metalwork; cemeteries have been identified outside the walls, though much of the Roman town lies beneath later medieval and modern Cambridge, limiting open-area investigation.
