Overview

History & context

Jay Lane is an early Roman auxiliary fort located near Leintwardine in Herefordshire, on the upper reaches of the River Teme. It is generally dated to the Neronian–early Flavian period (c. AD 55–75) and is interpreted as part of the campaigning network in the Welsh Marches associated with operations against the Ordovices and Silures, predating the better-known fort at Bravonium (Leintwardine/Jay Wood) which superseded it.

Significance

Historical significance

The fort formed one link in the chain of forts and marching camps along the Watling Street West corridor and the Teme valley, providing a stepping-stone between Wroxeter (Viroconium) and the Wye basin during the conquest of Wales. Its replacement by a fort on a different site nearby reflects the typical mid-Flavian reorganisation of the frontier garrisons in this region.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

The site is known largely from aerial photography and earthwork traces showing a playing-card enclosure with multiple ditches, and limited investigation has recovered first-century pottery consistent with an early military occupation. No substantial modern excavation has been published, and details of internal layout, garrison unit, and precise occupation span remain uncertain.
