Overview

History & context

The Lunt is a turf-and-timber auxiliary fort at Baginton, just south of Coventry, occupied from c. AD 60 to the late 70s/early 80s, likely established in the aftermath of the Boudican revolt. Its most distinctive feature is an unusual circular timber structure known as the gyrus — a near-unique Roman cavalry training ring some 34 m in diameter — and the fort's irregular plan, which bulges to accommodate this enclosure.

Significance

Historical significance

The Lunt is widely interpreted as a cavalry remount and training depot, possibly handling horses captured from the Iceni after Boudica's defeat — a rare functional specialism among known British forts. Its position in the Midlands, between the Fosse Way frontier zone and the advancing line further north, suggests a logistical/training role rather than a frontline garrison.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Excavations from 1966 onwards under Brian Hobley revealed the rampart, eastern gate, granaries, a timber principia, and barrack blocks, together with the gyrus, and these structures have been reconstructed in situ on their original foundations. Finds include cavalry harness fittings, military equipment, coinage closing in the Flavian period, and faunal evidence consistent with horse handling, supporting the equestrian interpretation.
