Overview

History & context

Old Winteringham was a Roman roadside settlement situated at the northern terminus of Ermine Street on the south bank of the Humber, serving as the ferry crossing point to Brough-on-Humber (Petuaria). Occupation began in the Claudio-Neronian period, probably with a short-lived military presence controlling the crossing, and developed into a small civilian settlement (vicus) that flourished from the later 1st through the 4th century AD.

Significance

Historical significance

Its primary importance was as a transport node — the Humber crossing linking Lincoln (Lindum) and the south with the legionary fortress at York (Eboracum) and the territory of the Parisi. The settlement functioned as a staging post, ferry terminal, and likely a centre for local exchange between Lindsey and the north bank.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Excavations by Ian Stead in the 1960s and 70s revealed timber and stone buildings, including substantial structures interpreted as a possible mansio or courtyard building, along with quayside features, pottery kilns, and significant assemblages of imported pottery and coins indicating prolonged trading activity. Aerial photography and fieldwalking have extended the known footprint considerably, showing enclosures and trackways spreading along the road frontage and toward the riverside.
