Overview

History & context

Prestatyn was a small Romano-British civilian settlement on the North Wales coastal plain, active from the later first century into the mid-second century AD (c. AD 70–160). It comprised a roadside vicus-style settlement with workshops, timber strip-buildings and a bath-house, associated with metalworking — particularly copper-alloy smithing — likely linked to the exploitation of copper from the Halkyn Mountain and Great Orme.

Significance

Historical significance

The site is significant as evidence of early Roman industrial activity in the hinterland of the legionary fortress at Chester (Deva), reflecting military or state interest in North Welsh mineral resources during the post-conquest consolidation of the region. Its apparent abandonment around the mid-second century parallels the decline of other small mining-related settlements in the area.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Excavations by Kelvin Blockley in the 1980s at Melyd Avenue revealed timber buildings, a small bath-house, and substantial evidence of bronze-working including crucibles, moulds, brooch-manufacturing debris and a hoard of brooches, suggesting on-site production rather than mere consumption. Finds of samian ware, coins and other material support the relatively short occupation span, with no clear evidence of continuation into the later Roman period.
