Ruthin was a Roman auxiliary fort in the Vale of Clwyd in north-east Wales, occupying a strategic position on the route between the legionary fortress at Chester (Deva) and the campaign and coastal forts of north Wales. Evidence suggests Flavian establishment in the later 1st century AD, likely as part of the conquest and subsequent garrisoning of the Deceangli and Ordovices, with occupation probably continuing into the 2nd century.

The fort helped control the fertile Vale of Clwyd and the inland route linking Chester to forts such as Caerhun (Canovium) and the lead and copper resources of north Wales. Its position implies a role in policing native territory and securing communications between the legionary base and the western auxiliary network.
Roman activity at Ruthin has been confirmed through finds of pottery, tile, and stratified deposits recovered during interventions in the town (notably around Brynhyfryd Park and the school site), where evidence consistent with a fort or military vicus has been recorded; however, the plan, full extent, and garrison of the fort remain poorly understood, and no comprehensive excavation has been published.
