Overview

History & context

This site preserves a stretch of the Roman and medieval town wall of Lindum Colonia (Lincoln) along Saltergate, marking the southern circuit of the lower walled town. Originally constructed in the late 2nd or early 3rd century AD when the colonia expanded down the hillside from the original legionary fortress on the hilltop, the wall enclosed approximately 41 hectares and incorporated monumental gates, including one on this southern line. It remained in use and was repeatedly refurbished through the medieval period.

Significance

Historical significance

As part of the defences of one of the four coloniae of Roman Britain, the Saltergate stretch represents the formal southward extension of Lindum, reflecting the city's growth as a major civic, commercial and administrative centre serving the lower Witham valley and the Fosse Way corridor.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Excavations along Saltergate in the 1970s and later have revealed the Roman wall foundations, ditch sequences, and traces of an interval tower and a southern gate, together with substantial medieval rebuilding in limestone. Stratified deposits have also produced evidence of intramural occupation and the silting and recutting of the city ditch over successive centuries.
