History & context

The Roman remains beneath the former Boots building lie within the walled lower city of Lindum Colonia (Lincoln), the colonia founded c. AD 90s on the site of the earlier legionary fortress. This area, south of the steep hillside and within the southern extension of the walled town, was part of the densely occupied commercial and residential lower colonia that developed through the 2nd–4th centuries AD.
