Overview

History & context

This villa, sited approximately 200m north of the parish church in the Darent valley area of west Kent, belongs to a dense cluster of Romano-British rural estates strung along the river between Otford and Dartford. Like its neighbours (Lullingstone, Farningham, Horton Kirby, Eynsford), it likely originated as a modest late 1st- or 2nd-century farmstead and developed into a more substantial masonry building during the 3rd and 4th centuries before going out of use in the late Roman period.

Significance

Historical significance

The Darent valley villas formed one of the densest concentrations of villa estates in Roman Britain, exploiting fertile valley soils within easy reach of Watling Street, Londinium, and the Kentish ports — producing grain and other goods for these markets. Whether this particular site was a high-status residence in the manner of Lullingstone or a working farm is not established.
