Overview

History & context

Turkdean is a substantial Roman villa complex in the Cotswolds, occupied from the late second century CE through the fourth century. Aerial photography and geophysics have revealed an unusually large multi-courtyard arrangement comprising at least two principal ranges set on adjacent terraces, placing it among the largest known villas in Britain alongside Chedworth, Woodchester and North Leigh.

Significance

Historical significance

The villa sits within the densely villa-rich Cotswold landscape that supplied the civitas capital of Corinium Dobunnorum (Cirencester), and its scale points to an elite proprietor profiting from the late Roman agrarian boom in the region. Its layout — with paired ranges rather than a single winged house — is comparatively rare in Britain and suggests either dynastic subdivision or a deliberately monumental architectural statement.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Investigation by Time Team in 1997–98, followed by further geophysical and limited excavation work, identified two main building ranges linked by ancillary structures, with tessellated and mosaic floors, painted wall plaster, and evidence of a bath suite. The full plan remains only partially excavated, and chronological phasing within the late second- to late fourth-century range is based largely on limited trenching and surface finds rather than extensive open-area excavation.
