Overview

History & context

Turret 15A (Whittledean) was one of the standard interval watch towers on Hadrian's Wall, positioned between Milecastles 15 and 16 in the central-eastern sector west of Rudchester (Vindobala). Like other Wall turrets, it would have been a small stone tower roughly 4–5 m square internally, built into the curtain wall and manned by a small detachment drawn from the nearest fort garrison, active from c. AD 122 through periodic occupation until the later 4th century.

Significance

Historical significance

Its function was purely military-observational, providing line-of-sight signalling between adjacent milecastles and turrets and surveillance of the berm, ditch, and ground north of the Wall. It is not individually notable, being one of roughly 160 such turrets in the system.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Very little is published specifically on Turret 15A; the structure has not been the subject of major modern excavation, and its remains lie beneath or adjacent to the line of the Military Road (B6318), which heavily damaged Wall structures in this sector when constructed in the 1750s. By analogy with excavated turrets in this stretch, it would likely have shown evidence of an early Hadrianic build, later abandonment or reduction, and possibly a blocked doorway in a secondary phase.
