Overview

History & context

Turret 25A (Hill Head) was one of the regularly spaced stone watch towers built into the curtain of Hadrian's Wall, positioned between Milecastle 25 (Codlawhill) and Milecastle 26 (High Brunton) in the central sector east of the North Tyne. Constructed in the 120s AD as part of Hadrian's original Wall scheme, it would have been a small two-storey tower roughly 4–5 m square internally, manned by a handful of soldiers detached from the garrisons of nearby forts (probably Chesters/Cilurnum) to provide observation and signalling along this stretch of relatively level ground.

Significance

Historical significance

As a routine link in the chain of turrets at roughly third-of-a-mile intervals, its significance lies in its contribution to the integrated surveillance and signalling system of the Wall rather than in any individual prominence. Like other turrets in the central sector, it was likely abandoned during the later 2nd century when many turrets were demolished and their recesses walled up, reflecting a shift in how the frontier was patrolled.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Very little has been published specifically on Turret 25A; it has not seen major modern excavation, and its position is known principally from the regular spacing of the Wall's turret system and antiquarian observation. No significant finds assemblage is recorded for this specific tower.
