Overview

History & context

Turret 24B, known as Tithe Barn, was one of the small stone watch towers built at approximately third-mile intervals along Hadrian's Wall, positioned between Milecastles 24 (Wallhouses East) and 25 (Codlawhill) in the central Tyne valley sector east of Halton Chesters. Constructed in the early 120s AD as part of the original Wall scheme, it would have been a roughly 4–5 m square tower of two storeys, garrisoned by a small detachment from the nearest auxiliary unit, and active until at least the later 2nd century when many turrets in this sector were decommissioned.

Significance

Historical significance

Like its neighbours, the turret served as an observation and signalling post, allowing visual communication along the Wall and southward to the Stanegate. It has no particular distinction beyond its place in the regular Wall system and is among the less prominently studied turrets in this stretch.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Very little is recorded archaeologically for Turret 24B; its position is known from the standard Wall measurement, but it has not been the subject of significant published excavation, and no notable finds are associated with the site. Surface traces, if any survive, are masked by later field boundaries and agricultural use in the Tithe Barn area.
